For one year, the Sympoietic Society art collective researched and experimented with waters, glaciers and local communities.
The project ICE * In Case of Emergency finds its conclusion after three art residencies in Finland, Italy and Austria.
In collaboration with UNESCO Biosphärenpark Großes Walsertal and theWalserherbst festival, workshops, performances, bonfire talks, art and science lectures with experts will take place at the Burgruine Blumenegg.
ICE finally culminates on September 9 in with a Glacier Hike and Glacier Ceremony to honor the vanishing glacier of the Rote Wand and say farewell.

MORE-THAN-HUMANS / MEHR-ALS-MENSCHLICHES | Lecture + Workshop | 15:00 – 16:00The first lecture and workshop will introduce participants to basic ecological concepts in order to fully engage with the ICE project. The lecture will consist of a short talk by Daniel Dolci, who will address our more-than-human environment. These concepts will be internalized in a practical workshop led by Nur Horsanalı.

GLACIER GHOSTS / GLETSCHERGEISTER | Workshop | 17:00 – 19:00
The participatory storytelling workshop focuses on environmental education and the imagination of the future generation of tomorrow. Children from and around the UNESCO Biosphärenpark Großes Walsertal are invited to listen to stories and folklore of glacier ghosts living in the habitats of bodies of water and glaciers.Drawings and short stories from Finland, Italy and Austria are brought to life in the form of textile sculptures in collaboration with regional tailor Claudia Ebster. The glacier ghosts sculptures and their short stories will be presented by storytellers.

Der partizipative Geschichtenworkshop konzentriert sich auf Umweltbildung und die Vorstellungskraft der Generation von Morgen. Kinder aus und rund um den UNESCO Biosphärenpark Großes Walsertal sind eingeladen, den Geschichten von Gletschergeistern in Gewässer und Gletscher zu lauschen.Zeichnungen und Geschichten aus Finnland, Italien und Österreich wurden in Zusammenarbeit mit der regionalen Schneiderin Claudia Ebster in Form von Textil Skulpturen zum Leben erweckt. Die Gletschergeister Skulpturen und ihre Geschichten werden von Geschichtenerzähler*Innen präsentiert.

FIRE TALK / LAGERFEUER GESCHICHTEN | Symposium | 19:00 – 21:00
The Fire Talk symposium gathers the international art collective, participants coming from and to the valley with a glaciologist around a bonfire. The intercultural character of fire creates a particularly collective atmosphere for knowledge transfer and poetic basis for ecological empathy. The event honours ancient rituals of belonging and social exchange, thus acts as a bridge between science and art to address the disappearance of glaciers.During the symposium interlocal bread will be baked and served with tea from local mountain herbs. The glaciologist shares knowledge about the fragile ecosystem of glaciers, and shares anecdotes from many years of experience in the Alps. Afterwards, the art collective experiments with different narratives including stories, poems and songs.

Das Fire Talk Symposium versammelt das internationale Kunstkollektiv, Teilnehmer*Innen aus und in das Tal kommend mit einem Glaziologen am Lagerfeuer. Der interkulturelle Charakter eines Lagerfeuers schafft eine besonders kollektive Atmosphäre zur Wissensvermittlung und poetische Basis für ökologische Empathie. Die Veranstaltung, die an althergebrachte Rituale der Zugehörigkeit und gesellschaftlichen Austauschs erinnert, fungiert somit als Brücke zwischen Wissenschaft und Kunst, um das Schmelzen und Schwinden von Gletschern zu thematisieren.
Während des Symposiums wird interlokales Brot gebacken und ein lokaler Bergkräutertee serviert. Der Glaziologe berichtet über das fragile Ökosystem von Gletschern und teilt dabei Anekdoten aus langjähriger Erfahrung als Gletscherforscher in den Alpen. Im Anschluss experimentiert das Kunstkollektiv mit verschiedenen Narrativen u.a. mit Gletscher Geschichten und Poesie.

For one year, the art collective researched and experimented with waters, glaciers and local communities in Finland, Italy and Austria. The Glacier Ceremony marks the conclusion of the interlocal interventions of the ICE * In Case of Emergency project. It will bring together the interventions, findings, ideas and narratives. The Glacier Ceremony, a performative moment in the great outdoors, a moment of remembrance, appreciation and mourning for the more-than-human loss of glaciers.
The ceremony is divided into a base camp and an altitude camp. Participants are invited to artistic interventions at the base camp on Alpe Klesenza from 10:30 am and are connected to the Glacier Ceremony at the altitude camp in community by means of image and sound transmission.The art collective will set out for the art hike accompanied by local mountain guides and will hold the Glacier Ceremony at the high altitude camp on a vantage point on the Rote Wand glacier at 11:58:30.
The ceremony is designed as a performative moment in the great outdoors, a moment of remembrance, appreciation and mourning for the more-than-human loss of glaciers - communally connected between base camp and altitude camp.

Ein Jahr lang forschte und experimentierte das Kunstkollektiv mit Gewässern, Gletschern und lokalen Gemeinschaften in Finnland, Italien und Österreich. Die Gletscherzeremonie bildet den Abschluss der interlokalen Interventionen des ICE * In Case of Emergency Projekts. Dabei werden die Interventionen, Erkenntnisse, Ideen und Erzählungen zusammengeführt. Die Gletscherzeremonie ist ein performativer Moment im großen Draussen, ein Moment des Gedenkens, Würdigung und der Trauer über den mehr-als-menschlichen Verlust von Gletschern.
Die Zeremonie teilt sich inhaltlich in ein Basis- und Höhenlager. The entire program is subject to change. The glacier ceremony is divided into a "base camp" and a "high camp".
Participants are invited to artistic interventions at the base camp on Alpe Klesenza from 10:30 a.m. and are connected to the glacier ceremony at the altitude camp in community by means of image and sound transmission.
The art collective is accompanied by local mountain guides on the art hike and will hold the glacier ceremony at the altitude camp on a vantage point on the Rote Wand glacier at 11:58:30.
